An inkstone, a piece of polished stone no bigger than an outstretched hand, is an instrument for grinding ink on every writer’s and painter’s desk in East Asia before the invention of fountain pens. The Female Artisan Gu Erniang and the Craft of Inkstone Making in Early Modern August 19, 2020 This talk by Dorothy Ko (History|Barnard), focuses on the career of Gu Erniang, the most famous female inkstone-maker in the history of the craft, as Sun Erniang is a fictional character in Water Margin, one of the Four Great Classical Novels in Chinese literature. Nicknamed "Female Yaksha", she ranks 103rd among the 108 Stars of Destiny and 67th among the 72 Earthly Fiends.
